SAINTS AMONG THE ANIMALS We’ve been searching for a good children’s book for quite some time. When we came upon this treasury of tales we knew that our prayers had been answered. Cynthia Zarin, a staff writer at The New Yorker magazine and Artist-in-Residence at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in New York City found her inspiration in Margaret Ward Cole’s 1905 children’s classic of the same name. Zarin’s book is written in the conversational style of a good storyteller, and we soon found out what a watchful fly and a whale have in common—a very grateful saint. We also discovered that saints know how to deal cleverly with greedy geese, scary snakes or even a wayward wolf, and that the hearts of these holy men and women are often touched by the loyalty and friendship of God’s little creatures. Included with each copy of “Saints Among the Animals” is a Sacred Bookmark. Made from galloon braid imported from Europe and commonly used as trimming on to sacred vestments, a small order of monastic nuns who live by the rule of “waste not, want not” use remnant pieces of galloon to make these exquisite bookmarks. While the bookmarks primary purpose is to mark your page, we can’t help but wonder if their sacred origins might also kindle a spark of divine inspiration. Book is 88 pages, hardcover and recommended for children ages 7-12. $30.00 (book & bookmark) Add to Shopping Basket To view more pages inside this book click here. |
