The Little Sisters of Jesus were founded in 1939 on the belief that a contemplative life can be lived by sharing the day-to-day lives and living conditions of the poor and marginalized people of the world—just as Jesus did. To support themselves, the sisters often make small handcrafts. Originally from France, Sister Madeleine learned to make miniature clay molds while living in Italy more than 50 years ago. Since 1957 she has lived among the poor in a small Pennsylvania town where she continues to make these precious little nativity sets by special order. As you can see, their beauty lies in their simplicity. We suggest that you place one of Sister Maddie’s crèches on your desk or night table during the Advent season as a gentle reminder of the humble simplicity of that very first Christmas day.
