Nuns have been making exquisite lace for the Catholic Church since the 8th Century. So we thought it would be wonderful to find a convent where lace is still made, in hopes that we might utilize the skills of the sisters to make lace gifts for you. We soon discovered that only a few convents continue to make altar cloths and vestments and that most of the work is now done by machine. But in Southern India, we found a special group of women who are preserving the dying art of handcrafted lace. The “Lace Ladies” are graduates of convent schools where lace making and embroidery have been taught since the 1800’s, when Belgian nuns first came to the region. Any lady or little girl will surely keep you in their good graces when you present them with this delicate embroidered hankie, edged in soft Cluny lace. And not only does each purchase help to preserve this dying art form, it helps these special women of spirit support their families who have been severely impacted by the tsunami. Every delicate piece of Cluny lace and each little embroidered flower seems to whisper, “Bless You.”
